Every player has the option to equip a jetpack, which is more useful for short-range rocket-assisted jumps to gain a height advantage or break line of sight, more so than attacking from above. He’s not the only one with a jetpack, either. Vader and Skywalker are stuck to the ground, albeit with lightsabers and Force abilities, while Fett has the option to use a jetpack to rain destruction from above. This idea is inspired by the playable hero characters in Battlefront II, while pick-ups in Battlefield are limited to specific weapons only. Speaking of overpowered, one of the other map pick-ups is the option to call in iconic Star Wars heroes and villains: Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Luke Skywalker have all been specifically cited as examples. This is also how players can spawn into vehicles such as X-Wings, TIE Fighters, AT-STs, and the mammoth AT-AT walker, which features heavily in Battlefront’s biggest mode, Walker Assault. Because there aren’t any classes in Battlefront, weapons such as the Smart Rocket, and gadgets such as the Squad Shield are collected via map pick-ups. These same lighter-armoured vehicles can be destroyed faster with heavier weapons, such as the Smart Rocket (read: rocket launcher). Conversely, unloading a clip at an APC in a Battlefield game is a waste of time and likely to get you killed. For instance, lighter-armoured vehicles in Battlefront, such as the AT-ST “chicken walker”, can be slowly damaged by primary-weapon blaster fire, unlike armoured equivalents in Battlefield. It means that players can not only select a variety of weapon classes and universal gadgets at spawn, they can also hold their own, individually, against a variety of threats. Sure, a competent player can hold their own, but there’s no option for a Battlefield player to heal, revive, rearm, destroy vehicles, and track enemy movements (via gadgets) in a single class. By contrast, while Battlefield can be rewarding for lone-wolf players, it’s purpose built to force the individual player to rely on teammates.
The marketing surrounding the game has included the oft-quoted, “Star Wars Battlefront lets you live out your Star Wars battle fantasies.” This idea is actually reflected in terms of the game design, in that while still a team game, there’s a greater emphasis on individual player satisfaction. This explanation, coupled with what’s been shown to date, leaves little room for Battlefront to be Battlefield: Star Wars. While certain generic shooter skills will certainly be transferrable, DICE has been clear about Battlefront being a combination of the similarly named games that came before, and its own take on the franchise. Refraction Games merged with another Stockholm-based developer called Digital Illusions CE (that’s DICE for everyone keeping track) and, together, they built Battlefield 1942 for the PC.īattlefield 1942 played like the lovechild of Codename Eagle and what appeared to be part of the recycled feature list of Valve’s cancelled Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms. This World War I-themed first-person shooter was built by a Stockholm-based developer called Refraction Games, and mixed on-foot shootouts with vehicular warfare. Before there was Battlefield, there was a game called Codename Eagle.
